CHARITY FUND RAISING LUNCH
Black is beautiful

Published: 22-JUN-05

The Nokia ' Face of Africa ' finalists modelled a synthesis of beautiful clothes for beautiful people - designed by some of South Africa's top dress designers- at a Hospice fund raising lunch at Summer Place, Hyde Park, Sandton, South Africa.

A moving address was given by Barbara Campbell-Ker, executive director of Hospice, explaining about some of the services the non-profit company provides for terminally ill patients. Compassionate care is given in a loving, supportive environment for both patients and family members in Johannesburg, Soweto and Alexandra - irrespective of the patients' ability to pay.

From this sombre reflective note we went straight into the ' Face of Africa' finalists strutting their stuff. Tall, elegant models, their skin tones accentuating the exquisite materials created into breathtaking designs.

Top of the list was the superb evening dress collection - slinky low backs, cutaway tops and long slits. But it was the colours that took people's breath away: turquoise, bright crimson, dusty pink, aubergine, earthy browns and only one little black number that looked drab in comparison to the other more enticing colours.

The models mingled amongst the tables instead of being confined to the catwalk - which gave everyone a chance to get up close to the fashions. The Afro Chic collections was produced and choreographed by Jan Malan from Umzingeli Productions.

The theme for the event was famous lovers and this was accenuated through romantic table settings, decor and an abundance of roses and rose petals. Each table was hosted by a well-known SA celebrity, who chose a pair of well-known lovers as a design element for her table. Designed by top decor artists each table had a different creative arrangement of colours, flowers, candles - which added to the ambience of the event.

Love is the beauty of the soul and one can only hope that amongst the VIPs and beautiful people, they felt moved to swell the Hospice coffers.
